You are in good hands. Here is everything you need to know before you sit down in that chair.
You are getting a professional makeup application and light hair styling and I promise it will blow your mind. Your artist will create a look that fits your needs, your comfort level, and your confidence. You will walk out of that chair feeling amazing and the makeup will last all day.
If you have any product allergies, tell your artist at the start of the session. If there are specific products you cannot use, moisturizer, foundation, anything, bring your own and they will apply it.
Hair and makeup for one guest is covered. You do not have to worry about that.
Here is something your artist does not know is in this guide, so please do not tell them. You are not required to tip because we have already covered their fees. But if they knocked it out of the park for you, slipping them a little cash would make their whole day. They work hard and they are genuinely amazing at what they do.
If you have inspiration photos, bring them. They are a great visual tool for your artist, colors, tones, themes, settings. Just know that an exact duplication cannot be promised.
Your artist will work with your face shape and skin tone to incorporate the elements that work best for you. Think of it as a starting point, not a blueprint. Sharing the setting, colors, theme, or tone is the most helpful thing you can do.
Julie is a professional makeup artist and licensed esthetician with a lifelong career in the performing arts. She earned a BA in Musical Theatre from Butler University and an MFA in Acting from Minnesota State University Mankato, and worked as a professional entertainer for over a decade before making makeup her career.
She was the Key Makeup Artist for the Pigasus Picture films "So Cold the River," "The Good Catholic," "Ms White Light," and "The Miseducation of Bindu" and an additional artist for the 2017 release "Columbus" and the 2019 HBO film "OG." She has over 40 published fashion editorials both here and abroad, and extensive experience in boudoir photography.
When she is not on set, Julie trains new estheticians and makeup artists at Indiana Wellness College.
____ years in the industry, Debi Pettigrew is a self-taught Makeup Artist who began her journey working with high school classmates. Following her passion, Debi left her clerical position to attend Beauty School in Merrillville, IN, graduating in 2007.
Her expertise in lashes and eyebrows led to a salon career where a chance meeting with a talent scout catapulted her to work with notable networks including Fox News and NBC. She has an impressive list of film and commercial credits as well.
Debi's diverse client list includes celebrities like YoYo, MC Lyte, and Queen Latifah, as well as politicians including Vice President Pence. Enhancements are her forte, allowing her to accentuate each client's unique features.
- Do not drastically change your skincare routine the week before. It can cause breakouts right before your session.
- Hydration facials are highly recommended the week before. Do one at a spa or at home using something aloe or cucumber based, mild and safe for sensitive skin. Do this 3 to 5 days before your session.
- Do not do chemical peels the week of your session.
- Gentle exfoliation is recommended 2 to 3 days before your shoot, followed by daily moisturizer morning and night up until your session.
- Eyebrow and facial waxing or threading should be done at least 1 week before your shoot.
- Do not go out in the sun without at least SPF 35 to 50 for a week before your session. Sunburnt skin shows up red in photos and will not match your foundation color.
- No tanning beds or spray tans within 4 weeks of your session.
- Come in with NO makeup on at all. If you wore makeup the day before, wash your face and remove all mascara so your artist has a clean canvas to work with.
I want you to love your look. If something is not right, speak up. Tell your artist before they pack up their kit, because once they leave there is no way to fix it. That is not a rule to stress you out. It is so you walk away happy.
Photo-ready makeup can look heavy in the mirror. The camera tones it down significantly. If you do not normally wear much makeup, do not be scared. Your artist can give you a natural look that photographs beautifully.

- If you want to wear your hair in its natural state, arrive with it already styled photo-ready. Just let your stylist know you are not getting your hair styled so they do not start working on it.
- Hair styling is light styling only. We do not apply extensions, weaves, or wigs, and we do not do blowouts or perms.
- Do not drastically change your hair or hair routine the week before your session.
- Do NOT put products in your hair before your session. Your stylist will apply heat protectant, hairspray, and texturizing spray. Arriving with product in your hair makes it incredibly difficult to style properly and may result in a greasy-looking root and lack of volume.
- Your hair must be clean and completely dry before your session. If you arrive with wet or damp hair, you will not receive hair styling.
- Do not flat iron your hair before your session. If you blow dry with a round brush immediately after your shower you should not need one. We do have a flat iron at the studio if necessary.
- Get your hair cut or colored 1 to 2 weeks before. Roots will show if not touched up, and you want time to fix any mistakes before your session.
