WHAT IF I DON'T FEEL SEXY: FINDING YOUR BEAUTY THROUGH BOUDOIR PHOTO SESSIONS

June 26, 20269 min read

At Enchanted Moments Artistry, an Indianapolis boudoir studio, feeling sexy is never a prerequisite for booking a boudoir session. This post covers what “sexy” actually means in session using a six-emotion posing framework, what happens when clients arrive nervous instead of confident, and why showing up matters more than feeling ready.

Let's get something out of the way right now, babes...

You do not have to feel sexy to book a boudoir session.
You do not have to feel sexy when you walk through the door.

You do not have to feel sexy at any point during the experience for it to be one of the most powerful things you've ever done for yourself.

I know, I know. That sounds like this huge contradiction.

Boudoir and sexy go together in most people's minds the way coffee and mornings do. You don't really question it. It's just assumed.

But that assumption is exactly what keeps so many women from ever making the call. So let's sort through that together.

Because the question "what if I don't feel sexy?" deserves a real answer instead of some generic affirmation or pep talk. You deserve real talk.

Why "Feeling Sexy" Is the Wrong Starting Point for Boudoir

Here's the thing about waiting to feel sexy before you do something designed to make you feel powerful..

It’s nothing but a damn trap, albeit a very convincing, very well-dressed trap.

Feeling sexy isn't a prerequisite to boudoir, but my experience has shown me it's often the result of it.

When beautiful humans like you tell me they don't feel sexy enough to book, what I usually hear underneath that is something more honest:

I don't feel worthy of being seen.
I'm not sure I deserve a day that is entirely about me.
I don't think the camera will find anything beautiful in me.

That is exactly the doubt and argument boudoir is designed to answer.

What "Sexy" Means in a Boudoir Session

In my studio, sexy doesn’t come down to a single look. It’s not defined by a body type or a wardrobe choice. It’s certainly not a demand for you to perform or be anything but yourself..

When we’re in my studio in the middle of a shoot, sexy is just another emotional tone, and it’s one of many we might move through in a single session.

I use a framework with six emotional tones:

  1. coy

  2. joy

  3. longing

  4. confidence

  5. pleasure

  6. desire

Sexy lives somewhere in that range. So does soft. So does fierce.

So does reflective and tender and a little bit unhinged in the best possible way.

You don't have to arrive in one emotional gear and stay there. Frankly, you don't have to perform anything.

What comes out of you naturally in the room, in the moment, with the music and the light and someone who is completely focused on finding what's true about you, well that is what we photograph.

And I promise you, it's more than enough. You are more than enough.

What Happens When You Don't Feel Like Yourself

If I’m being honest, most of my clients don't walk in feeling confident or sexy or even ready.

They walk in a little shaky. They’re holding it together, trying to perform and maintain while their nervous system is doing something very different underneath.

I sure do know that feeling. I drove five hours to my first boudoir session and sat in the car outside the studio seriously considering forfeiting every dollar I'd paid just to avoid walking through that door.

I was that nervous, and there was nothing sexy feeling about it in that moment. But you know what? I walked out feeling like a million dollars.

My first boudoir experience allowed me to see myself. I actually saw myself, and in a way I never had before.

The story I’d been telling myself about what the camera would find did not survive contact with what the camera actually discovered and drew out of me.

That is precisely what I want for you.

The Moment Everything Shifts in a Boudoir Session

There's a specific moment in every session, usually after the first full set, where I turn the camera around and show you what we've been creating together.

Every single time, something changes in a client's face. The story they walked in telling themselves hits a wall.

Is that actually me?

Yes. It always has been. The camera didn't manufacture anything. It just found the angle you'd never been given before.

That moment is what I work for. It fills my bucket every single time. And you don't have to feel sexy to get there. You just have to show up.

You Don't Need a Certain Body to Find Beauty in Boudoir

I want to be really direct about this, because it is the most common reason people put empowering moments like boudoir off for years.

I photograph people across every size, age, shape, and season of life. My client closet has 900+ pieces, XS to 6XL, because I want every single person who walks through my door to find something that fits and feels like them.

I have invested over $26,000 in education specifically around posing, lighting, and body movement, because knowing how to position a person to showcase what is uniquely theirs is a craft, and there’s truly no room for guesswork.

We live in a 3D world, and these images are going to be in 2D, so I'm going to work with angles, light, and movement to show your body the way it deserves to be displayed.

The more you trust the process, the better the images. Your body, exactly as it is right now, is ready for boudoir.

The only thing that needs to change is the story you're telling yourself about it.

What the Camera Actually Sees

I am not in the business of cataloguing flaws. When you are in front of my camera, my entire focus narrows to one thing: finding the light, the angle, the moment that shows you something true about yourself.

I'm looking at the way light lands on your collarbone. I'm thinking about the line your shoulder makes when you tilt your chin up just slightly. I'm watching for the moment your body relaxes, because that's the shot.

None of that has anything to do with whether you arrived feeling sexy. It has everything to do with showing up at all.

How a Boudoir Session Holds Space for Where You Are

When you enter my studio, know that I am there for one very important reason, and that is simply to serve you and provide the pics you deserve.

I read the room. I follow the client. I meet nervousness with stillness instead of volume.

If you need to take a beat and rest, we do that.

If you need to turn on music and dance it out first, we do that.

If there are tears (and there sometimes are) I get tissues, and chances are I cry with you, because I'm not immune to what happens in that room.

I’m here to demonstrate every pose before I ask you to do it. I will not put you in a position I haven't shown first. If something doesn't feel right, we change it. You are always in control of what's happening in that session.

You can come in wanting one thing and leave having done something completely different, and both versions are valid.

Some of the most powerful sessions I've ever photographed looked nothing like what we planned, because what the client actually needed to express was bigger and truer than what she thought she was coming in for.

Your Session Does Not Have to Look Like Boudoir

Not in the traditional sense, anyway.

My studio offers beauty portraits, fashion editorial, cosplay shoots, and empowerment sessions that are fully clothed.

Boudoir is not this one thing. It has become whatever the person in front of my camera needs it to be. If lingerie is not where you are right now, that is okay. We start where you are.

And sometimes where you are turns out to be further along than you expected.

You're Worth the Decision to Do This

There is no perfect time, plain and simple.

The conditions will never be perfect. The weight will be different, but there will be something else. The timing will be better but then something else will come up.

The list of prerequisites is bottomless because we keep adding to it.

The one regret I hear again and again is “I wish I had done this sooner.”

And this isn’t me talking to hear myself. I know these things to be true because I have lived it.

A health scare left me in a hospital bed to sit with everything

I know this because I lived it. I had four days in a hospital bed to sit with everything I hadn't done, everything I'd been waiting to be worthy of, everything I'd told myself I'd get to once the conditions were right. And I was angry. Not at anyone else. At myself, for waiting.

So when you wanna stop making excuses, we'll talk. And if you're reading this and thinking that's me — that's not a coincidence. That's your cue.

You're worth the decision to do this. Even if you have to schedule it a year out and make payments. Even if you're scared. Even if you don't feel sexy today.

Especially then.
